GASTRIC BYPASS

Picture
Gastric Bypass surgery or the Roux-en-Y bypass as it is often referred to, is a restrictive and malabsorptive weight loss procedure.

It restricts the amount of food you can eat and reduces the number of calories you absorb from food.

This procedure reduces your stomach size and shortens your digestive system as the stomach is divided into a small upper pouch and a much larger lower "remnant" pouch that is no longer used.
The small intestine is then rearranged to connect to the smaller pouch. Any food consumed then bypasses the majority of the stomach and small intestine altering the way in which food is digested and absorbed.

The gastric bypass procedure produces favourable changes in gut hormones that reduce appetite and enhance satiety and also delivers significant long-term weight loss results of between (60-80% of excess weight). Speak to your Dietitian if you are not sure what your excess weight is. The gastric bypass is technically a more complex operation than the gastric band or gastric sleeve and can potentially result in greater complication rates as well as long-term vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Having Bariatric surgery is life changing. It’s important to understand exactly what’s involved in the procedure, including any potential complications and what to expect afterwards. Having said that, surgery can be extremely successful for those who are willing to make long term consistent changes to their diet and lifestyle.
