Whilst the scales can definitely be a useful tool in weight management, not all progress can be seen on the scales and health is certainly not fully defined by a number on the scale. For example, scales do not usually tell you your body composition of water weight, fat percentage, and muscle mass and there is a difference between these. The reading on the scales can often stay the same or even read higher if you’ve gained muscle mass while losing body fat which can be incredibly frustrating to see.
Non-scale victories are alternative ways to measure your success and progress rather than just relying on the readings from the scales. They’re things that are worth celebrating because they mean you’re moving towards your goals regardless of your overall body weight. Acknowledging your progress in other areas can help to keep you feeling positive and motivated.
If you are feeling frustrated with the scales, sit down and make a list of all the things that have improved or are better since starting your journey and you will see that carrying on is worth it!
Examples of non-scale victories include:
Clothes fitting better
Having more energy
Being able to tie your shoe laces
Ability to take the stairs
Reduced joint pain
It is important to recognise these changes in yourself, even if you consider them small. Celebrate your non-scale victories!
